Chiefs vs Patriots: A Game of Whammies

If your were to tell the Kansas City Chiefs that they would be facing a New England Patriots squad with essentially no Tom Brady for the entire season opener, I’m sure they would ask you if Christmas came early this year. Yet, that was exactly the scenario that came to be on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Foxboro.

Early in the first quarter Kansas City’s safety Bernard Pollard came on a safety blitz and dove for Brady in attempt of a sack. Unfortunately the lower leg tackle took the league’s best quarterback out for the game—later it was found out to be for the entire season. Thus, we had the games first whammy.

But perhaps the biggest whammies came from the sideline of the Chiefs. In lieu of the Brady injury and subsequently his depature, Kansas City still ended up on the wrong side of a 17-10 final score. However, not to be out done by the Patriots, the Chiefs Brady Croyle was also injured when driven into the Foxboro grass while attempting a pass. His throwing shoulder was hurt, but it doesn’t seem to be too serious. – whammy number two.

The major difference between the respective injuries is that the Chiefs have a capable proven backup in Damon Huard who could easily be the starter even without an injured Brady Croyle. The numbers seem to be saying the same thing. In relief, Huard went 8 of 12 for 118 yards and 1 td. That is a QB rating of 91.7—pretty good right? In comparison, Croyle went 11 fo 19 for 88 yard and no touch downs. Thats is a QB rating of 69.6. Quarterback controversy? – whammy number three.

The Chiefs play next week against division rival Oakland. If they hope to avoid the whammy bug they must sure up the QB position and improve their play along the defensive line. With all the off season signing and youth influx; only tallying 2 sacks against an uproven back up isn’t enough. Assuming those issues are corrected, the Chiefs look poised to open Arrowhead with a bang against a Raiders team that they dominated in recent years.

Tickets go on sale September 13th for the upcoming October 25th show. The band will release Death Magnetic on September 12th. Their upcoming album supposedly rocks. Writer Shay Quillen had this to say, “I can, however, report that this album rocks. And those who hated “St. Anger” will be pleased to know that, as recorded by Rubin, Lars Ulrich’s drums sound like drums, not garbage can lids, and that the guitar solo has returned. A lot of the songs are epics, with multiple sections and shifting grooves.”

Lewis Black coming to KC Music Hall!

Lewis Black will be gracing Kansas City with his presence on August 7th at the Music Hall. Black once described his humor as “being on the Titanic every single day and being the only person who knows what is going to happen.” You may have caught him on the Daily Show where he makes regular appearances.
